"In order to be able to work creatively, you have to feel good in your environment," thought a well-known artist, who recently had his studio renovated and upgraded with structural engineering.
Behind the thick walls of a picturesque 19th-century Irish manor house hides the artist's studio of a well-known artist. In recent years, the 115 m² studio has been extensively restored. Thanks to a large glass roof it now has a light-flooded workspace and individual exhibition areas for gallery purposes.
One of the biggest challenges of the project were domestic installations. The task was to cover both the heat requirement of the valuable old building and to create a comfortable working environment for the artist. In addition, the indoor climate should be comfortable with large crowds – for example at vernissages - and provide the right conditions for the works of art in progress and the completed ones.
High-quality system solutions
Variotherm proved to be the perfect partner after intensive discussions with the artist and restoration team. The combination of 80 m² modular wall heating and 40 m² VarioComp modular floor heating - both designed for drywall construction - meets all the essential requirements.
Since the invisibly installed wall heating works with radiant heat, the studio now has a pleasant indoor climate that is not affected by drafts or by raising dust - ideal conditions for the artist and his work. The modular wall heating was installed on the inside of the exterior walls and on the partitions of the individual art areas up to a ceiling height of five meters. Despite the integrated module panels, the works of art can easily be hung on the walls. A pipe locator detects the heating pipes integrated in the module panel. The VarioComp modular floor heating system was installed in the entrance area and in the wide aisle. Its thin construction height of only 20 millimetres, as well as its low weight and easy installation were characteristics that have proven to be extremely positive.
Sustainable ideas
In line with the ecological principle, both wall and floor heating systems are made of the same, environmentally friendly materials. Additional plus: A biomass system fuelled with wood from local forests has provided a well-functioning and aesthetic solution - creating a sustainable source of energy for the water-based surface heating system.
"Finding the right heat distribution system for this artist's studio and the countryside gallery was an exciting task," says Peter Sullivan, Variotherm's partner in Ireland. Ultimately, this task could also be masterfully put into action: both the artist and his works are in good hands here.
